The greatest hazards to photographs, films, and other media and documents are moisture, heat and light. Ideally photographs, important and valuable documents , negatives, prints, and slides should be kept in an environment that is stabilized at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, although the cooler the better. The relative humidity should be 30% to 50%. Never store your archives, collections or any important materials in areas that receive direct sunlight, fluctuating heat and/or cold, moisture, environmental pollutants and dust. A cool, dry, stable environment is of utmost importance in preservation.

It is equally important that your collections are enclosed and stored in proper acid-free storage materials. Film, prints, documents and any other media should be stored in clean, acid free, secure enclosures. Most photo albums, scrapbooks and boxes bought at most stores are not safe. Storage materials or anything that comes in contact with your collections should be purchased from reputable vendors that are knowledgeable and specialize in selling products that meet true archival standards.
